Is it possible that fish oil can fight erectile dysfunction before three worships (2021-12-2)? , pointed out that fish oil can improve depression reports are lack of reliable scientific evidence. The main scientific article I cited is a review of Omega-3 fatty acids for depression in adults, and it was published in the highly recognized Cochrane Database Systematic Review (2021-11-24).
Yesterday (2021-12-21), another related paper was published in the American Medical Association journal JAMA, and its title is Effect of Long-term Supplementation With Marine Omega-3 Fatty Acids vs Placebo on Risk of Depression or Clinically Relevant Depressive Symptoms and on Change in Mood Scores (Long-term Supplementation Omega-3 Effects of fatty acids and comfort agents on depression risk or clinically related depression and emotional change ratings).
This study recruited 18,353 people with no depression and an average age of 67.5 years old, and males accounted for about 51%. They were randomly assigned into two groups, one group (9171 people in total) ate fish oil and the other group (9182 people in total) ate comfort agent. The fish oil group is to eat 1 gram of fish oil containing 465 mg EPA and 375 mg DHA per person per day. The period of taking fish oil or comfort agents in this way is as long as an average of 5.3 years. (Note: Regarding the relationship between fish oil, EPA, DHA, and Omega-3, please see fish oil, EPA/DHA, Omega-3)
As a result, the fish oil group that took fish oil had a total of 651 depressive events, while the salmon group that took the comfort agent had a total of 583 depressive events. The difference is that the risk of depression in the group that eats fish oil is about 13% higher than that in the group that takes the comfort agent. As for another risk associated with depression, that is, emotional changes, no significant difference is shown between these two groups.
This study also detected several other disease risks, including cardiovascular events, all-cause mortality, self-killing, gastric bleeding, prone to stasis, stomach inappropriate or pain, and the result was that none of these risks showed significant differences between the two groups.
So, the final conclusion of this article is that omega-3 replenishment is not supported in adults to prevent depression.
In fact, it is not just a dysfunction, but many other diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases, have been now large and serious studies have shown that fish oil supplements cannot be prevented or treated (please see fish oil supplements, coffin addition). However, please note that the fish oil mentioned here comes from supplements, not from food. So, fish oil from food (mainly fish) is still health-friendly.
