According to The Athletic, Digne reached an oral contract renewal agreement with Villa.

Aston Villa defender Digne verbally agreed to renew his contract with the club until 2028. The left-back's original contract will expire next summer. He expressed his willingness to stay at the team after the end of last season and emphasized that coach Emery also hopes that he will continue to play.

In the past month, the club has actively promoted the renewal process, and now the two sides have reached an oral agreement.

Digne's future was unclear early this summer, Atletico Madrid was interested in him, and Villa also had some concerns about his salary of up to £120,000 per week, which could put the club at risk of violating UEFA's "Second Cost Rules (SCR). The rule requires that the team's overall salary shall not exceed 70% of the club's total income.

So, although Digne remains a key member of Emery's plan and has a healthy competition with Mattson at the left-back position, the club has also considered finding younger and less expensive alternatives.

In the end, Villa decided to keep the veteran with a stable performance, and he was also regarded as a player with outstanding professionalism.
